One consequence of humans living longer seems to be that we can now see first-hand how the lessons of history are forgotten. 75-80 years ago, Europe emerged from the ruins of WWII with a determination to never let it happen again. Now the 'big six' in Europe are increasingly voting for fascist parties.

This didn't happen overnight. It started 40+ years ago when voters became complacent and blindly voted for fascist-adjacent politicians like Thatcher and Reagan for selfish, short-term reasons.

@francis It's a good point - in the UK especially, the 'winners' take 100% of the power on less than 50% of the votes cast (never mind the electorate as a whole). But given the majority of the electorate seem comfortable with this state of affairs (if they didn't, enough would have have voted a majority Liberal/LD government in decades ago), it seems they're happy with the status quo. That's simplistic of course - many simply don't vote, but that in itself is an abdication of responsibility.
