This is the US, but I think it’s worth thinking about. If they co op isn’t a workers’ co op it often uses its rhetorical community credentials to screw its workers over. So still a capitalist hell hole. organizing.work/2019/04/why-do

Liz Truss has sent a team of "war crime experts" to Ukraine to collect evidence against Russian troops - but she voted for a law giving British soldiers immunity from prosecution for war crimes.

There's a word for that.

The silence of the Labour front-bench on the case of a vulnerable, non-verbal black British boy being wrongly detained and nearly deported is the straw that broke the camel’s back for me.

My ebooks and audiobooks (from Tor Books, Head of Zeus, McSweeneys, and others) are for sale all over the net, but I sell 'em too, and when you buy 'em from me, I earn twice as much and you get books with no DRM and no license "agreements."

Why do people here refer to Twitter as "birdsite"? /1

@TQ Also, perhaps, "give it the bird" 😀

Just upgraded the Green Plenty Mastodon instance to 3.5.1

Had to bump Ruby version to 3.0.3 (which is painless if you know the rbenv command)

The rest of it seems to have gone ok

I did reboot, though, rather than just run the restart commands.

I also did Ubuntu updates of everything so the machine is up to date too.

Digital Ocean's turnkey Mastodon is version 3.1.3.

Next thing is to lock things down a bit. I'm going to borrow what's in freeradical.zone/about/more - seems like a good starter.

Apparently, hate-speech instances are going through the introductions tag to target LGBTQ+ people.

If you see anything like that, report it. This is not okay.

'Illiberal democracy' has spread from Europe to America's heartland: Texas, Florida, Missouri, Idaho and other red states use trans health care, abortion, race and other social issue to engage in cultural authoritarianism. via NBCNews dld.bz/j9dW3

Believe it or not, this is a paid advert by the Labour Party and not the Lib Dems.

Imagine thinking multilateral nuclear disarmament is a bad thing @Keir_Starmer.

Le Pen proposed:
- deporting migrants w/prison sentences; UK has been doing it since 2007.
- excluding all migrants from welfare state; UK has no recourse to public funds policy
- removing automatic citizenship for migrants 18+; doesn't even exist in UK

Well

I have returned to Mastodon and am going to make more of a go with it.

I write software, using Ruby, to pay the bills.

I write socialist fiction, recently started a substack for my Green Plenty project, which will probably end up as a book.

I relax by playing the guitar, making music in general, walking, canoeing (but I need to get my fitness back up to pre-lockdown levels).

My kids are in their late 20's and I've been married for over 30 years.

this is why the conservative social media platforms never get off the ground. isolated, there's nobody to harass as a reference point. they have nothing to say to each other. they need to be in proximity to people they can insult - that's their social interaction need

At work I just heard the "we are a family" rhetoric.

My family are people I know and love and want to hang out with.

The people I work with are all lovely, and I like working with them. My choice to hang out with them is based on not starving, however.

I worked at Oracle during 9/11. Ellison sent an email saying "they are all family". 2 months later mass firings to keep da monez flowing.

When push comes to shove family stay with you. I mean the family you choose, not the one you didn't :)

A "Labour" MP that has no problem with people starving under a @Conservatives
Government.

Who are the "Tory enablers"?

Our democracy is a sham.

From 1979 and onwards, there has been the greatest plunder of our country since the Norman Conquest. On example:

“The1989 privatisation of the water supply in England and Wales transferred not only the provision of clean water and sewerage but also vast swathes of land - more.

When I graduated from my Applied Computing and Statistics degree in 1986 about 40% of the cohort were women

So this thing about women not doing computing wasn't true then. I think they were driven out by the macho types.

I mean, you've seen the film Hidden Figures.

The cliches about brains and ability are rubbish - there is a problem with the system because things got worse. The current status quo ain't all that.
